      THE FROG

It has reclusive existence in the semi evergreen forest patches in Sri Mongal. You have to have sharp ears to recognize its calls and the patience of the world, not mentioning the ability to withstand the hardship of traveling in the forest at night, to locate it. But once you find it, it is truly rewarding.

The darkness was enveloping the forest during a monsoon evening in Satchari National Park, Habiganj, in the northeast of Bangladesh. Few of my junior colleagues and I ventured into the forest in search of a frog that was calling from a broad leaved tree. The call was unfamiliar to us. Unfamiliar call means unfamiliar species of frog, may be even a new species for Bangladesh. Using our torch lights and headlamps we were searching every leaf of the tree, but the call comes so suddenly that we could not find the source.

Beautiful Frog:- After seeing such a beautiful frog I was so overwhelmed that I temporarily forgot the abdominal pain that I was having due to my gall stones. I expressed my gratefulness to my young colleague a promising herpetologist Suprio Chakma, who informed me that this frog occurs in Satchari. Later on, however, I found out that the species is rather common knot only in Satchari, but also in Lawachhara National Park.

Taxonomic status:- Taxonomic status to the Twin spotted Tree Frog was an age old puzzle for scientists. In 2005, a group of scientists, headed by Jeffery Wilkinson, had published a scientific paper claiming that the specimens found in Myanmar belong to a species new to science, because the specimens differ from typical Twin spotted Tree Frog by having greener upperparts.
